Basically, a bunch of insane idiot authors get together in November and say "You know what? We don't want to survive this month." And we all sit down and pledge to write 50,000 words in 30 days. If you actually do it, there are some prizes for writing software and things. But, writing any amount of words is a win to us, because you sat down and created something!
